I'm thinking of trying to trade my 4x4 ranger for a 2wd since I'm getting out of the fourwheeling scene (for now) and my rangers got about 157k miles. I'm wondering how much better mpg's a 2wd 3.0 5spd than my 4x4 3.0 5spd because I'm getting horrible fuel mileage, averaging about 14 city not going over 2500 rpms right now and the best ive ever got was 16.5. I love my truck but I don't really have the need for a 4wd now and if I would get 18mpg city with a 2wd, it might be worth going for a lower mileage newer ranger that would be more reliable.

mileage should increase because you won't have the weight of the front half of the 4WD system to pull around. your driving style seems very good, so the only thing left would be to check the rear axle ratio and tire size to see if mileage improvements can be made there on your new ride. just my $.02.

your truck is getting terrible mileage. you should see an increase with a 2wd like strvger mentioned.

The biggest reason an increase would be obvious is because of the smaller tire size associated with 2wd pickups.

The 3.0 loves mechanical advantage. Smaller tires or even a lower, numerically higher, gear ratio will improve mileage on a 3L truck.

just get some edge knuckles and a bII dummy case and call it a day) lol
you'll want to join the 4x4 side again, trust me. lower the torsion bars, remove the rear block, remove front diff and axle

this is all assuming its running reliably if not go get ya a newer 3.0 or 2.5 duratec(they come in extended cab 2wd)

btw im getting 16mpg with my 99 f150 5.4 4x4 w/body lift at 80mph average speed

I try not to think. It hurts my head.

With my 4.0 litre, 5 speed, 4.56 gears and 33" mud terrains I still average 16-17 mpg....

My 98 3.0, 5 speed manual tranny,4x4 consistently gets 21 mpg. Maybe you just need a good tune-up...

I'm going to get new spark plugs soon and see if that helps. And it seems like when I run walmart gas the mileage goes down the toilet so I'm going to start buying from pilot which is right across the street cause my truck hates to run on more ethanol than petroleum obviously.
