What's involved?

This is on a 2004 ranger. A good friend of mine wants to run older model ranger tails on their truck...wants the security of an amber turnsignal. Reverse of what everyone and their brothers wanna do.

SO....

What's involved? Can I make it an OEM setup using '99 and older taillamp harness and just plug it in? I want as un-jerryrigged as possible, and if I can, i'd like to make it completely OEM. I'd rather not run a signal hot from the front signals to the rear signals, though I know I can. Want it to function JUST like a 99 and older truck.


Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I understand his need exactly because I am in the same situation.
I have 2003 and will be installing a Stepside bed with 1999 Segmented Taillights. The actual rewiring is not a problem but the only problem that needs to be addressed, and I do not know yet, is "Will the changes affect the electronic part of the braking system, the ABS" ?

Does anyone have any input to this situation?

Here how I want to do it:

1) Tail Light - Take the existing brake/turn signal wire at the Tail Lights and move it to the directional only location of the three segment lights.

2) Brake Light Switch - Determine the wire at the brake light switch that is stock brake feed/load wire, going to the brake light in the rear, not the power side but the load side of the brake light switch and disconnect it from the switch. (tape it back and mark it "not to be used - old brake light wire" - just in case someone wants to return the lights to stock).

3) Run a new wire from the load side of the brake light switch to the new brake lights.

Easy BUT what will the changes do to the electronics in the ABS System; we need to determine this before doing anything.

If you/buddy do the change contact me with the results, how it worked out, what problems occured and anything that has come up in the ABS System.
(Note: I will be installing a Hurst Shifter today and ordering my RCD 5" Lift soon but I have to get the new stepside bed in place first, $$$$).

^^^I like the idea...i've thought of something similar. BUT....what about the signal only hot? I really dont like the idea of running a 15' wire that splices into the headlamp signal.

So...let me get this straight.....replace the pigtail on the brake position sensor for the taillamps, and wire in new wires back to the taillamp....the load side.....the side that tells the lamps to turn on? I may have to try this out on my truck before doing hers. JY here I come for a pigtail from a 99 and older truck.
 
It appears as though the flow of power is determined by the multifunction switch in regards to the signals. I just got done looking at my 2001 Wiring Manual. Need to find a '99 or a B-series diagram to determine if i'm on the right path.
