Tailgates

Do this with your tailgate! I'm doing it and have everything almost ready to go.

wow..that picture has given me hope..that looks absolutely awesome!
i have a friend who can weld/work with metal well..an i'm already brewing up ideas

:icon_welder:

first i gotta buy the truck lmao! going to look at it this week.

i just had the craziest idea..i either need a tailgate handle or something to release the tailgate so i can access the bed when i have me soft cover on..i thought of just sticking the tailgate handle back out to the factory location, but how gay is that?? the truck looks mighty clean the way it is, SO..
how about a cable or electronically releasing actuator like a trunk/hood pop?

here is the idea..two trunk pops on either side where the original clasps are, and instead of JUST tailgate straps, i would get the hydraulic trunk/hood shocks; that way the tailgate just doesn't slam down..i would wire these to actuators into the same line and have a button either inside the ashtray, or in the glovebox, and then POP! down comes the tailgate!!

i need the tonneau cover; not using it is not an option.

people who have the electronic release hatch for their explorers, your input as to what you think of this idea would be great..

i would also like something like this...

on tailgates where the handle is not on the outside... where is it at? on the inside? how do shaved door handles work? same way? electronic actuators?

i will let you know when i go to look at this truck..my guess is if its done properly, the tailgate handle is re-located to the inside of the gate. Cheaply, i would be led to believe it has been removed altogether. Usually when you shave door handles, you get an electronic "door popper" actuator. I want my design to completely release the tailgate and the shocks will slowly lower it down..the tailgate straps are there just in case one day the shocks don't hold pressure...

that sounds really cool... i would love something like that... just a really nice, almost artistic touch with the shocks that is very unique.

thats xactly what i was saying!! looks awesome!! i would love to that to mine.
as for opening the tailgate: maybe a hood latch activated by cable and a pair of minivan/hatchback shocks. that way it wont open too fast, and seems cheapier than using electric devices.
the tailgate original latch can be activated with a hood cable. it just needs some time to find the best spot to adapt it and run the cable to the cab were ull need a hood/ car trunk latch release.
i did something like that with my prev ride, it didnt had an inside release for trunk and removing the key and getting out to open the trunk was annoying.(tercel)

i think i will do the manual trunk release idea. that seems like the best fail-proof way to go. i am going to rip apart a tailgate some time and watch how the inards work and plan from there. Even if i drill a hole into the existing hardware and hook a cable through it, that might even be enough..
i was looking at the trunk of the gf buick, an i noticed that besides the electric actuator, there is the picture of the kid running away from the kidnapper's car (who the hell would do that, anyways??)..i could fasten a cable to the connecting point of the two rods, drill a hole in the bottom of the tailgate, then dangle an end of the cable though there..when i want to open the tailgate, just reach under the truck, pull the cable, BAM! I would put a magnet on this end to prevent it from swinging around under there..dunno, more i think about it, the more ideas i come up with haha!

once the tailgate handle on the 93 ranger we had was broken at one side, so i ghetto rigged the rocking piece(the one that pulls the side locks and returns with a spring) to the one on the other side.
so the hidden relese under the tailgate seems to be a good idea.

i figured that this would be a safer way then an electronic actuator and also a hell of a lot easier than trying to rig it all the way up to the cab. I plan to view this truck next week as i am going away for the weekend, then I will decide for sure if i want it or not.
I may scheme up some rough sketches or blueprints for the FORD tailgate idea..thats gonna be the most custom part of it all. I think I may do it myself; I have a gun an stuff to paint so I'll give it a try lol. I'll just grab an old tailgate to throw on in the meantime so that way my truck still at least has a tailgate.

i have the 85 ranger tailgate fited to my 94 ranger. the latch is not the same and the botom were the tailgate sits is about an 1/8 of an inch bigger on the 85 tailgate.the body lines dosent match the 94 model too and seem to be a 1/4 inch higher too. im looking for the 93-2010 tailgate to make it fit right
