Tailgate tire rack

alright, so im sick of cleaning mud out from behind the rear bumper. it collects so much in there off the back tires (no, im not getting mudflaps)
so im going to be looking into a tube bumper.

figured it would also be a good time to consider how im going to carry my fullsize 33" spare when i upgrade tires. so i came across a few tailgate tire holders, need your thoughts on these!!

this one would be nice as it keeps the flat sides, and gives room for a high lift jack which could be very useful offroad. id assume i could also attach gas can holders to this one on the sides.

i like this one as well because of the pre runner style, which with tube bumpers and larger tires, would be a sweet look for my truck!

What do you folks think? Thoughts on each design?

I think they're sweet. I would buy one but there so damn expensive. I was thinking about building one but I'm not that good of a I think you should get one though.

I have seen a variation of the second one that stands the tire up allowing you to carry two full size spares. seen it on an F350 and it was carrying 2 37"x14.5" tires.

Yes, built it myself. It opens both ways and can be flipped 180 degrees so the tire sticks out of the box for more box space. Cost me under $100 to build.

Looks awesome man. If I had a welder or knew how to weld I'd probably attempt it myself. But I don't have one, nor know how to haha

Tiregate..... sounds like one of those political screwups like watergate....

I had given thought to this sort of thing a couple times but my biggest issue with them is that you lose bed space unless you have one that hangs out the back or you do a vertical one like the BIIs and Jeeps had. Since I use every truck I have, giving up bed space isn't really an option for me. But I do like the looks of that flat one and the angled one, not sure which way I'd go, the flat would give you better visibility, but hey, who cares what's behind you on a trail till you have to back up (and that's when you send your spotter out there anyway, right?)

I just mount my spare 33 inch tire flat in the bed with an aftermarked spare tire mount bracket. I modified a bed extender to make it shorter. It saves money from building or buying a tiregate thingie. I don't use the bed for bikes anymore. I can still haul stuff around....lumber, sod, mulch, rock. Fabtech has them. Jim sells them on this site (he still does I think). If you are after that one of a kind look then spend the money...if not get a flat mount and save money for something else your truck can use.

We just put a liftgate on one of our trucks at work, it is incredible how annoying the extra 4" of tailgate is when you are trying to back up a trailer or even just the truck. A tire would stick up a lot more than that.
