tail pipe - cat connection question

Hey guys,

My tailpipe separated from the pipe that exits the cat. It looks like this "flange" that used to hold the tailpipe onto it has rusted out. Whats the name for this part? I just want to know what to ask for when I go into a parts store. I've provided a picture for reference. Thanks for any information.

I wasn't sure if this was the same problem as described in this thread:

Here's my pic:

Assuming the flange on the cat side is still useable, you'll need the exhaust extension pipe. Just tell the parts dude you need the pipe between the cat and the muffler.

thanks for the reply.

In regard to the intermediate pipe, it looks like I may have a different setup. Is it possible that I have 2 cats?

that flange rusting out is a real common problem here in the rust belt. You can buy a two piece flange to replace the rusted out one. You also need a new "Dounut" exhaust gasket.

nice. Where could I buy this two piece flange? I went to advance auto and it sounded like i needed to buy the intermediate pipe (which i don't appear to be using currently) in order to get the flange.

You can get the split flange from advance (they dont list it on the computer), but if memory serves me correctly its like $30 bucks.

When you go to the parts store, ask if you can see the exhaust book. It should have a diagram of the whole exhaust system for your truck. You can easily point at the book and say "that's the piece I need." Whenever a customer needs an exhaust piece, I always go to the book instead of relying on the vague description that the computer gives. Once you point out the piece you need, they can usually look at a detailed photo of the part on the computer to see if it has the correct flange on it.

I'll have to give that a shot. The computer diagram of the exhaust they had didn't look close to what is actually on my truck. I went to a few different advance auto locations hoping to find someone behind the counter that was a little bit more determined than just relying on what the computer says I need.

Thats what comes up on the advance computer screen. As you can see the intermediate extension pipe you need varies based upon the wheelbase of your vehicle. It will come with the loose end flange on it. As far as the other side, it wont list the flange. The only way to get around that would be to use a split flange as stated before. Try a 2.5" one first. I dont know the specs, but I can give you a few part numbers to ask for and you can measure form there...

Part # 36130, 36131, 36132. You'll also need the hardware kit #36129.

Good Luck...

If you don't find it by monday I'll look it up at work, get the genuine Ford screen:D

the same thing happened on my 93 Explorer, the "bell" part of the flange rusted apart, but the flange on the cat was still usable, so I got a 2ft piece of pipe, found a flanged end of pipe leftover from one of our hot rod builds and welded it together, tightened back up the two bolts with the spring things and hooked the axle-back piping and was good to go, I ditched the stock muffler, and still had all the stock piping on, so it wasnt really loud, still exited out stock location, sounded good for a 4.0. If only that thing didnt start running like crap I wouldnt of sold it

Just out of curiousity and assuming the flange on the cat end was rotten as well... Couldn't you just buy a piece of pipe that would fit "over" the pipe of the cat and clamp that down then continue the setup as normal or do you have to have the two ends meet up and use the donut gasket?

You can.....but you'd have to use an adapter from the cats ~2.5" pipe down to the 2.0" pipe into the muffler. Personally, Im not a big fan of clamps and piping that you'd find at the parts store. They tend to rust rather quickly.
