I just bought a 92 ranger 4 cyl, 5 speed. When running if the tachometer is working it spits and sputters and backfires, but the Tach does not work all the time. If I attempt to crank it and the Tach is not working it runs like a brand new truck. If anyone could help guide me as to what to do I would appreciate it.

Is it factory or aftermarket tach?> CHeck where the tach is wired into the DIS. Also check all the grounds. I just mounted a sunpro tach on my 92 2.3l. If you want someone to walk through another installation with you Ill do my best. Also there is an awesome write up in the tech section.

It is the stock Tach that came from the factory in the truck. I have looked and I could not find a wire shorted out under the hood or any missing grounds. I have never had a ranger before and do not really know what I am looking for. If anyone knows which wire feeds the Tach and where it comes from it would help me greatly. Also thanks "feellnfroggy" for the response.

check all wires especially the one from the coil/ingnition to the tach? good luck

This sounds more like a failure in the ignition circuit. Is the check engine light on, and if not, are you sure it works (does it come on for a few seconds when you first turn the key)?

Yeah it comes on when you first turn the key on, but does not come on in either situation, tach working, tach not working.

Hmm... I'd start working my way back from the coil packs. Test each with a meter, then check the wiring for shorts to ground, then go to the ignition module and do the same.

+2 i don't think the tach should cause driveablility problems. but a fault in the ignition system could cause tach problems.
