t-5 swap

Well, after a long saturday (15 hours under the truck) I have a good solid tranny in my little beast. It seems to shift pretty nice and the clutch is stiff and grippy. The pilot bearing was a pain and there were a few other issues I ran into, but it seemed to work well. With my bench seat, the shifter barely bumps into the seat in 3rd gear as i am using a straight shaft. I will be building an extender shaft to move it about 2 inches forward and 1 inch up. I also need to buy a shift knob, but it so far, I am pretty happy with it. I'll get some pics up maybe later today.

Well done, Jesse! Good for you!

sorry, 4th.

i have a couple concerns though. it seems there is a light dry scraping noise that is dependent on vehicle speed and but only when the clutch is engaged. it sounds like something is out of round and scraping on something else. any ideas as to what that might be?
the other thing is that at idle in neutral, there is a bit of noise. when i push in the clutch, it goes away.
thanks for your help,
jesse

As for the scraping, does it do it with the clutch in and the truck rolling? Is it more dependent on vehicle speed or engine speed?

I think all of my T-5's have the same neutral idle rattle. Probably why they use so much noise insulation in the T-birds. :)

it is a vehicle speed related issue and it seems to go away when i push in the clutch.

Jesse, are you going for the 2wd off road approach with the truck? Kinda curious as to what your intentions are with it.

yeah, that's the idea. mostly. it doesnt really completely fit any category and somehow fits a little into every one. my intentions were kinda to make a really all-purpose truck. haul loads, off road, race, look and ride decently, get good gas mileage and cook me breakfast. it does okay with most of those (excepting the last)

edit: i love surprises. that has been the theme i guess.

cool, I like that approach.

I have a question though, and maybe you've already said it somewhere. But how'd you do on emmisions with the 2.3T?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to come no where close to emmisions (runs fat down low cause of my boost set level), and I know for sure safety is going to fail miserably. (not cause its unsafe to drive, just for shit like no parking break and stuff). I may end up keeping it registered in Ohio every year since the truck is in my moms name. What was your experience like?

***this can be answered in PM if you dont want to stray O/T***

update: My truck has developed a new noise. I think it is the throwout bearing. At cruise RPMs and idle with the clutch engaged, there is a chirping noise. If I put just a little pressure on the pedal, the noise goes away. Can i repack the grease in this bearing or would it need to be replaced?

If you're going as far as to take the throw out bearing out to think about repacking it, might as well just replace it. Would hate to remove it, try to fix it, only to find out it didn't, then have to take it all back apart again to put a new one in.

If its chirping, its worn beyond re-packing. Replace it. I didn't know you could re-pack the newer bearings anyway. Learn something new every day. shady

well, i'm not sure if you can repack it or not. that stupid p.o.s.
the guy that sold me the clutch stuff said it had less than 3000 miles on it. maybe the TO bearing wasnt the same age as the clutch. for the first 500 miles, it didn't make any noise.

For the $20 or so it costs for a new one, it's not worth trying to dick with the old one.
