I was lookin at an explorer at the junk yard that had a complete 8.8 under it with no tires on it sitting up nice and easy to grab everything I would need to do a disk brake swap I think. I was wondering if I
1. Pull the 31 spline axle shafts
2. Grab the spider gears
3. Take everything for the brakes, (calipers, lines, disks, dust guard, backing plate, and all brackets an crap)
Would I be able to swap everything onto my 8.8 that is under my ranger now? I dont want to buy the entire axle and at this place they let you take whatever you want.
If I swap out the spiders in my ranger for the spiders from the explorer, that will make it so it will accept the 31 spline axles right?
Just a thought I had. Gettin bored and need a saturday project now that the mudder only gets worked on if I break somethin. Let me know guys what you think. And yes I know it would just be easier to buy the axle flip the perches and burn them in. Please dont give me a response like that I just wanna know if what im askin is possible cause Im bored and it sounds to me like fun.

wont work. axleshaft diameter and length is different. the only thing that is the same between the 2 is everything in the differential (except the side spider gears and diameter of the cross pin)

you should be able to swap the disc brake stuff though

That sux. Thanks for letting me know! Guess that makes sense why you dont see anybody doin it. Prolly still get all the disk brake swap stuff off it then. Once again thanks!

Get the whole axle. The disc brakes are not a direct swap. The axle offset (the distance the axle sticks out of the tube) is different.

no problem man, there's been a few threads on the subject. i guess everyone has the same bright ideas here. lol.

i bought a ranger 8.8 from another TRS member back in january for the 373 gears in it. while i had it i compared everything to the explorer 8.8 i already had.

FYI, the disc brakes from a 31 spline 8.8 will swap directyly onto a drum brake 31 spline 8.8. just get the calipers, rotors, backing plates, etc.

Yeah, The brakes are interchangeable between 31 spline axles, not 28 spline.

good to know. i guess the flange where the backing plates would mount would be different between the two since an EX 8.8 has a 3.25" tube diameter and the ranger 8.8 has a 2.75" tube diameter. i was just thinking the lug pattern would be the same. i know some rangers use 10" drum brakes as well....that could create some problems.
