Gizmo gave you a good link to someone who did the same thing you want, used the Explorer motor and the Mustang computer and wiring.

alright well my trans started slippin on the way home tonight so the swap maybe sooner than i thought

OK here is another country heard from...

I like the GT40 parts on the explorer and yes they would be nice to say you have them but in all reality with the power in a 5.0L from an f150 or early Mustang 5.0L you will not need the goody parts.
You can also use 351 heads on the 5.0L; they bolt up but watch the water passages, I think the older 351 heads are better than the newer ones. Some say the 351 heads were the beginning of the GT40 Heads,, pick and choose.

My thought would be to get a low milage 5.0L and stick to an early 90s engine harness.
The early 90s Mustang Harness is a separate harness within the engine bay with the computer on one end and all of the sensors on the other. if you get a used harness try not to twist it up too much from stock positioning because it will help with the layout when trying to re-install it.

I used a low milage '93 Stang engine w/ the OEM harness/computer from the same vehicle. My buddy and myself had it in and running almost overnight. The only problem that arose was the fuel pump connection but it got worked out and worked well.
By using a manual trans computer you can pick a non-computer C4 Auto or any manual you want without worrying about the computer interaction.

Luck on your choices,

p.s. last thought, buy a wrecked low milage early 90s Mustang with the 5.0 and pull all of the stuff you need then junk it.

.

The "good" 351W heads are the 69-76's. Starting in 77 they got the same heads used on the 302's. The current GT40 head development was started back in the 80's, using the 60's GT40 heads as a baseline. The full story on this is in Ford Racing's "The Official Ford Mustang 5.0" by Al Kirschenbaum

And that's the rest of the story...

ok so if i get a mustang motor what trans would i use if its goin into my 4x4?

also the 5.0 mustang has a distrubitor is tha goin to cause me any trouble playing in the mud??

I have a 1995 ford ranger xlt, the factory anti theft system occasionally
does what ever it wants, I have a standard key, electronic locks, the word theft in red in the instrement panel, there are 2 relays and a fuse for this system. 1 relay(engine compartment) also controls starter relay, 1 fuse(drivers side fuse panel, inside) also controls fuel, 1 relay (under dash , right of steering column) controls only anti theft instrement panel stuff.

I did remove the relay under dash, This didnt change anything. Will probily label relay and put in glove box. Would like to know how to rip this stuff out of truck forever.

This system trips up and shut everything down, you cannot even turn headlights on.

Is it possible to remove the complete system ?

Just basing this on personal observations (I'm not into the mud scene, but do drive into water that's deeper than I should be into at highway speeds) But a Duraspark distributor is pretty much resistent to moisture. Points distibutor? Not a chance with water around.

Any from a F-150/Bronco with matching x-fer case.
As far as the distrubutor, what Baddad said for hard core mudding, but they've been running the points distrubutor for years, not into mudding either.
