swap with a 289

Hi I have a 1994 Ranger 4x4 and would like to install a 289?
also would my 2.3 tranny bolt up to that motor?

any advice much appreciated

No joke, just curious have the 289 available dont want to deal with the 2.3turbo any longer it has issues these days!
plus im just starting out and do not know what my options are ive heard of swaps with 302,351 and maybe more but was wondering about 289?

The 302 block as longer cylinder skirts to help with piston stability at the bottom of the stroke, and some of the later ones starting in the 80s had some better bracing in the casting. Other than that the 289 and 302 blocks are 100% the same and interchangeable. You can even bolt a 302 EFI system onto a 289 block.

So go research the extremely well documented 302/5.0 swap and you will have ALL your answers.

No, there is no Ranger transmission that will bolt to the 289, especially manuals 1988 and up

Best bet for manual would be an M5R2 from a 1997-2003 F-150 with 4.2l V6 and 4WD
The 4.2l V6 used small block windsor bolt pattern

The 289 is not a worthwhile swap. I'm thinking about doing something similar. The best options as far as V8s seem to go are a 302 or a 347 stroker if you're looking for some higher horsepower numbers.

The c-5 trans found in the very early rangers and b2's can be built to take a lot of torque, and have a removable bellhousing that can be swapped for a bellhousing that will fit.

So theoretically could someone swap a Windsor into one of these manual transmission F150s and keep the manual?

Yes, they could, but the 4.2l V6 was rated at 205HP, similar HP to the stock small blocks

347 strokers have heat issues. Go with a 331 unless you are just running it on a track or going to do some fabrication for a bigger rad
