SOO, drving home from my exhaust appointment my 99 4.0/5spd Ranger started to feel like it was missing when I would let off the throttle. When I came to a stop it wanted to die. The idle is only at 500-600 and surging up and down. The rest of the drive was a bit scary on the frontage road cause it kept trying to stall out. When I tap the throttle the response time is horrible and the truck feels very underpowered.

I had to drive my explorer to work, I havent' had time to look into it yet.

Before I tear into it, any ideas or things to look for? Its not throwing any codes...yet. I'm thinking it feels like a fuel problem, so maybe the fuel pump?

Thanks in advance -Robert

Hope this is not your problem, (but)!
There are many Ranger owners that had exhaust work using (arc-welders) and the shops did not remove battery ground lead, and fried the computer?

or jsut a toss up, check ur MAF. buy some cleaner at fleet its only like $4 dn my buddy had that problem, it would die on the highway when trying to accel, but it does sound more like ur comp may be fried

Well good thing they didn't touch my truck today! I made the appointment only to get told that I would have to come back tomorrow morning, but good thing they didn't get me in or I'd probably assume something like that happened.

I had a rough idle problem a couple months back that I cured by cleaning the MAF. I'll clean it again when I get home, but this feels way different than it did back then. Thanks for the quick replies!

Ya vacuum leak sounds pretty likely. Might want to replace the fuel filter if it hasn't been done in a while. Also check your spark plug wires and make sure a connection didn't come loose resulting in misfires.
