what will i need to make it all work? will a m62 work or one from a super coupe? what modifications will i need to do to the fuel system ect ect.

for arguements sake what would i need to do it? besides needing the sc and different, pullies, belts, and modifying the upper intake, what else would i need to do?

A supercharger would most likely be extremely hard on the motor because of the instant boost. It creates a lot of force added on the crank, connecting rods and pistons.Alot of the sr20de guys tryed to supercharge their motors and ended up snapping connecting rods and cranks.

Dude, you have an '89 model. Swapping in a 4.0 is easy and would yield better results if you still want to turbo later.

No replacement for displacement and all that.

Plus the 4.0 makes gobs of torque. It turns my 33s effortlessly (3.73 gears) whereas my 2.9 struggled on any hill.

If you ponder the 4.0, shoot me a PM and I'll send you the wiring document I used for my swap.

And seriously think abut the following points:

2.9 hasn't been built in a LONG time. Parts = getting more scarce and more $$$

2.9 has weak heads. Add FI and ???

The junkyards are FULL of good 4.0s in front of blown A4LDs

If your truck is manual, you're going to need a 4.0 clutch setup either way you go. The 2.9 clutch is a steaming pile behind a 2.9. Add horses and watch it slip. If you have A4LD, that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

Not trying to dissuade you from FI the 2.9 (well, maybe a little :icon_thumby:), but be sure to fully explore your options before spending dollar 1. Find someone who has done what you are planning if possible. Nothing worse than dumping loads of $$$ and time into a project that leaves you unsatisfied when you get the final result.

All that said, I've personally seen a 2.9 with a Paxton centrifugal on it sitting in the 4 Wheel Parts store garage. The owner wasn't there so I couldn't ask his own experiences with it, but it obviously CAN be done.

HERE is a video of a turbo'ed 2.9 in a Ford Sierra. Looks like fun!

I'll see if I can find any info on that Paxton kit and edit this if I do.

Good Luck in whichever way you choose!

I haven't had that problem, and I've been running a blower on my engine for several years now.

the reason i think the crank and connecting rods snapped on the sr20de's is because those motors are better for turbo's that superchargers. i think the reason is because there use to the little lag that the turbo's are notorious for. too much at once= boom

I really find it hard to believe that the cranks and rods are snapping on sr20de's.. those are the two strongest and most over-built parts on that whole engine. :icon_confused:

what stock engines come with superchargers? and has anybody found a cheap m62 supercharger?

I've been around SR20DET's for more than a minute, well since 2003. We're not popping bottom ends. They're actually very robust. hehe. I've been racing one for about a year now. We typically blow head gaskets if anything from too much boost, once in a while somebody will starve one on a long corner.

Where are you getting your information?

Yeah, the junkyards are usually littered with 1990's buick and pontiac 3.8 V6's that have M-62's on 'em. I keep tripping over them at my local JY.

thanks for the info sevensecondsuv. ill look next time i go to my junkyards.

You might find the M90 easier to work with, though. The plumbing for those internally bypassed blowers is rumored to be problematic.

would i need to upgrade my fuel system and ecu? if so what would be the good way to go?
