my buddy has a 1991 Ford Bronco. He has 2 12" sub woofers in the back and they are making a thud sound when they hit hard what could the problem be?

They are clipping, basically trying to handle a frequency that they are not designed to handle. Assuming that they are powered correctly and not being under or over driven. Tell him to adjust his crossover settings to a lower frequency, subs should be set so the crossover is at about 80htz

I think the problem is that he has subwoofers in his truck. He should get rid of them and replace them with speakers that operate at audible frequencies.

No. That is not the reason. If the guy wants subs, he can have them. I have subs and love them. And subs do operate at audible frequencies.
