I bought a 20T bottle jack to use in my press. Used it once with fantastic results.

Went to use it today, and the shaft goes down when I go to pump the handle. After about 30 pumps, I managed to get the shaft to the point where I needed pressure to bend something in the press, but the handle is super stiff, and it won't budge the part.

I remind you that I finished the job very easily with a 12T I had laying around.

I'm gonna bring it back, but I would like to know what would make a brand new bottle jack just up and quit working?

Poor manufacturing usually seals and what not... What brand was it?

Torin Big Red. Yes, unfortunatly, it is made in China..... :annoyed:

But for it to crap out on the 2nd try, while the 12T (which is the same brand) has lasted many, many cycles for about 5 years? Something's not right...

sometimes u just get one that's s@#t quality control doesn't always catch the defective units

the first time you used it you could have overextended the piston, which i've seen screw up some jacks... but i would lean towards it just jammed up... could have had a piece of crap in the fluid which plugged a port in the pump...

this would be my first guess....i've had it happen with jacks before.took them apart, cleaned them out and everything's back to normal.

OK. I'm gonna return this one for another one, and if that one does the same thing, then I'll try to clean it out.

Although, I have no idea on how to clean out one of these things......:icon_confused:

it's not too hard...just take apart things that look like they can come apart, keeping track of where they came from.

the only thing to watch out for is the pressure regulator-it'll be a fitting with a slot for a flat head screw beneath a plug.just keep track of how many turns in it is.drain all the oil, shoot it good with brakeclean and reassemble.fill it up with oil and work it a bit to get the air out.

i'll betcha anything you'll find a metal shaving or bit of a seal stuck in there somewhere.they aren't real picky about assembly in those chinese sweat shops.

I already took it back and exchanged it. If this one does the same thing, then I'll do the take it apart thing.

Thanks, though!

that's your best bet.

but should the need arise, don't be reluctant to try disassembly.they aren't very complicated, and with the skills most people on this site already have dealing with mechanical items it will be a breeze.
