Stuck at job-site

well you could check your firing.. but that's hard to do with one person... and really had to do without tools...

with no tools you might be sol. you can pull your dist. and check the condition of the cap and rotor. just cause it looks good on the outside doesnt mean that it looks good where it counts. there should be 2 screws on each side of the dist. push them down with your screwdriver and turn them half a turn. look for burning/melting/ charing etc

Pull a spark plug wire off a plug, stick a screwdriver in the plug end, lay it in some bare metal with a small gap, crank the starter and see if it sparks. Using another spark plug is better but you have no tools.

Sounds like you have fuel. Crank it over once with the throttle held wide open, after turning the key to Run, then Off several times before you crank the starter.

if its an 89 and direct injection or tbi this shouldnt make a difference there is no aclerator pump like there would be in a carb so WOT doesnt add more fuel. it is comp controlled.

Well, if the IAC isn't working, there's fuel and little air, so opening the TB and using "clear flood" for a start attempt might surprise you. He can check for spark on the same attempt.

Might fire right up just from priming the fuel pump.

just out of curiosity, have you checked your fuses? both under hood and dash side

how old is the alternator? a new battery can wear out an old alternator. can you jump it?

TFI. If you have fuel and it won't start holding the pedal halfway down, your TFI is more than likely shot. It's a VERY common point of failure on these engines.
