strange noise when i crank it up

i went muddin the other day and there was alot of sand out there too, since then everytime i crank my motor i here a weird noise, could i possibly have sand in the starter?

its quite possible....but without hearing the noise its hard to say, could be a lot of things.

Let me guess it's only as your letting off the key when starting it?

it is right as i let go of the key, whats goin on

the starter pinion bushing is probably toast/contaminated.
