Strange 4x4 Problem

I have a 1993 ranger that will not engage in 4x4. When I hit the 4x4 button the light comes on but it does not engage. When I put it in nuetral and hit the 4x4 lo button the 4x4 light goes off. Ive searched the forum and hadnt seen anyhthing like this
Any Ideas?

If the 4x4 light is coming on, the t-case should be engaging into 4x4.

Chances are it's your automatic hubs that have failed. Best solution is to swap manual hubs in place of the autos, as the are far more reliable.
