Stock shift knob

How in the hell do you remove these without destroying it. I have read they are just threaded on and you should be able to remove them with a little effort. Hah-I have put some big effort into this and it will not budge. Any suggestions out there?

Manual trans knobs are put on with a spline/knurl on the shaft and pressed on. Easest way to remove is to put a proper size open end wrench around the shaft and use a hammer to pound it off. Others will have other ways.

They are not threaded.

The EASY way to get one off is to first work the top of the boot down over the rib that keeps it at the top of the lever then you can slide a thin wrench between the rib and the bottom of the know and pry the knob up and off.

Alternatly you can employ the "Conan method"

Grab ahold of the knob and pull, pull harder, pull REALLY hard, pull until your
eyes feel like they are going to explode and when the knob comes off, drop it in the cup holder and go to the ER to have the broken pieces of the dome lamp removed from where they are imbedded in the back of your hand. (I know someone who did EXACTLY that)

Mine fell off...or was loose when I got the truck...can't remember...but now I have a nice new knob...and a spare because I lost the screws that hold the new one on and had to buy a whole new knob...

heat it with a hair dryer makes it easier to pull off

I was just going to say - hair dryer and a glove is the proper method. They never stay on as good after you just pry 'em off.

Mine fell off in my hand, many, many times. I'm surprised yours doesn't do the same. After getting tired of being left with just my knob in my hand, I RTVed that sucker back on the stick.

I prefer the heat and yank while it's in second gear (wear a glove).

The one in my choptop though apparently someone had a problem with it coming off in the past and epoxied it in place.... only problem was someone before me trashed the knob which made it uncomfortable to shift with (looked like they used a pipe wrench on it). I had to hacksaw it nearly in half and take a cold chisel to it to get it off.

The one in my Ranger comes off on it's own in the summer. Once it went flying during a quick shift into second gear. Took me a week to find it.
