Step son is looking at buying a "project" truck....

Make sure you help him replace the bushings in the shifter. Last 70s truck I drove with a column shifter got stuck in 2nd due to terribly cracked bushings.

Let me tell you about a trick with two worm gear hose clamps some time:)

As for the 360Ford? it's NOT an "FE" it's actually an "FT"
(though most people don't know there's a difference.)

so ....... I feel a lesson coming on...... whats the difference ...... and explain the worm gear hose clamp trick ........ maybe I can get 3 educations tonight.....

My experience with the 360 is as follows. First one I drove was in a '76 F250 with probably way over 200k on it without a rebuild. Old farm truck..you know. It smoked pretty bad but never quit. The second was swapped into a '68 F100 and supposedly had a cam, aftermarket intake and big 4bbl edelbrock carb. That one had a lot of issues, would bend pushrods, overheated, etc. I think it was probably just a really poorly build motor but it did OK when it ran.

I once bought a straight, no rust 66 F100 with a 292 for $500. I sold it 2 months later for $1000 and the guy swapped in a 360 and put the 292 in his Scout.

Give me a refreser course...whats the shift pattern on a 3sp...

(pretend your in pass seat looking straight at shifter)

Pull towards you and up for Reverse, pull towards you and down for first, push away from you and up for 2nd, push away from you and down for 3rd. First time I drove a "3 on the tree" I couldn't figure out why it was bogging and felt like it was going to stall... I had it in 3rd.

I'd like to know the difference from your point of view. Sure would bet the 360 is a FE. Same block casting numbers as a 390 or 428, used the same heads, uses the same distrubutor. There was the 359 and 361FT, FT motors only used in medium/heavy duty trucks. Usually had extra webbing down around the crank. The FT had a larger oil pump requiring a different distributor and drive shaft. The FE heads came with either 16, 14 or 8 bolts to hold the exhaust manifold on. The FT's had 10 bolts. Working with those motors can get so confusing because the same block casting number was used on several different displacement motors. Only was to know for sure is to measure bore and stroke.
All FE were very durable, my 360 never let me down except at the gas pump.
Enough info for to night?
Dave

Correct me if Im wrong but I thought the 360 was a dodge engine. Ford made the 351 and the 351 modified(small block 400) then went straight to the 390. Did i miss some Ford engine crossover years?

Ford had the 360 and so did AMC. There was the 331, 352, 360, 361, 390, 406, 410, 427 and the 428, all members of the FE family.

Ok, so the 360 and 3sp trans is a pretty decent combo then for reliabilty.

Prolly shouldnt ask but IM curious...what kinda mileage you figure? Im guissing prolly 4.11 gears, Will it do better then my F350 at 5MPG?

later,
Dustin

As far as mileage, can't really remember in good weather. The '73' w/360 4x4 F-100 got 4 mpg once in the Winter - 5 below, 8-12" of snow on the ground, running 4.10 gears and 11" wide tires. Didn't matter much about the mileage then, sure got to where I wanted to be.
Dave

The "built" 360 I drove got about 8. The other one got about 12.
