So my 94 B4000 (4.0L) was acting like the starter was going out. I went from having absolutely no problems, to it not wanting to spin every now n then. I could tap it and get it to work, but since I deliver with it, it got pretty annoying being randomly stuck for a bit.

Anyway, I got a starter for a 94 Ranger from the junkyard for it, haven't tried swapping em yet, but before I do I got a question. It will work right?

The reason I ask is because I talked to the previous owner, and he told me he replaced the starter once before. But, he said the junkyard he got the part from told him a Ranger one wouldn't work, and he had to use one out of an 94 Explorer.

I thought these trucks were all Ranger aside from the body changes? So was this guy who told him that full of it? or is there really a difference?

As long as its from behind a 4.0L with the same transmission you have (manual or auto) it will work just fine.

Yeah, someone was full of it, or there was something specific about his inventory (years, engines something like that) that means he didn't have a Ranger starter that would work.

X2 on that I just replaced mine with a jy one out of the same year ranger and bolts in no prob. No sence in spending extra cash on something when not needed.:icon_thumby:

Well, just to update, it turns out my starter wasn't the issue. I had a semi-broken negative terminal, which while it seemed got tight, apparently didn't get tight enough. I went to take it off before replacing the starter, and it broke on me. So I just went ahead and replaced it with a new one. Since then I have not had a single issue with the truck not starting. Guess it's nice to have a backup starter anyway just in case.
