So I installed an s2000 start button where my broken cigarette lighter was. it looks pretty factory and only took about 30 minutes to install.

Ok, here is a quickie on how I did it. I used an S2000 start button. to make it fit you have to file the ribs off the side and use a file to enlarge th lighter hole a tiny bit. you use an old floppy drive power cord to plug into the back of the switch, it fits great.

And here is how it all wires up. if you use th top yellow wire on the column harness for the 12V+ then it will only be powered when the ignition is on.

Did you do it so you had to have the key on.... Cause if not, whats stopping someone like me coming along and pushing it.

yes, it is wired so that it only gets power when the ignition is on. use the top yellow wire in the column harness to do that. and even if it was always on all it would do is crank till the battery dies. Plus I lock my doors and roll my windows up. EL paso is known for car theives.

well see the issue's with most rangers is you take a coat hanger go through the door handle and push the lock up. but yea i had my 88 hooked up like that cause i broke my ignition, so everything was on toggles. but i just did a wire from one side of the starter relay and another to the other side of it

hmm, never been able to do that on a newer ranger. but any car is only a brick away from getting broken into. and on these newer trucks to get to the steering column wiring you have to take off a plastic panel then 5 bolts to get a lare metal plate off to reach the wires.
