Hello all. I don't usually post but I'm stumped. My son was driving his 99 4.0 ohv and said the rpms slowly went down then stalled and can't get it to start. I have searched here and online trying anything that sounded similar. The fuel filter is changed, pulled a plug it was wet and there was spark. Pushed the Schrader on the fuel rail and fuel squirted to the fender . This engine was put in about 10 months ago. It was used but I replaced timing chain gears and tensioner and resealed everything and it was running fine. It has no codes except p1000 with the new scanner and an ignition code for the gem module. Any ideas or what values to scan for would be helpful. I did replace the cam sync when I put engine in.

Just to be sure, get a can of brake cleaner or ether and give it a shot in the aircleaner and see what happens.

Thanks I did it and nothing it won't even sputter like no spark. I know it has spark but it doesn't even sputter like it's trying g to start just cranks I'm at a loss. Could it be the cam sync is bad it want squeeling or anything like that.

Did it overheat? How is compression?

Oil level?.

Weird...you have spark and you have fuel. What's missing?
If you pulled the plug and it was wet and there was spark - what was it wet with? Sparks and gasoline usually result in combustion of some sort. If you have spark, the 50/50 test should have shown some life, correct? Even if the timing is off?

I'm with Bobby check compression and talk to son about what else may have happened.

The oil is ok no water and radiator is full and no oil in there as far as I can tell. I'll do a compression check today. The plug looked a bit dark but smelled of gas and I put my finger over hole had him crank and it sucked my finger down and blew it back and I felt moisture it smelled like gas. I'll check with him again about overheating it .

I only checked the one plug though I'll check the rest when I compression check it.

Ok so finished compression check late last night. Im at work and forgot the paper I wrote the numbers down on but my highest cylinder was 60 and my lowest was 52. I did a fuel pressure check before I pulled all the plugs and it was just above 60 at the rail. bad compression but still can't figure out why I dont even get a sputter when trying to start. am I missing anything?

Youre missing compression.

An engine wont run with less then like 90 or 100PSI

Compression is low for sure. I thought it should be in the neighborhood of 120.

Should also add that if all the cylinders are that low....you probably jumped time and more then likely destroyed some valves in the process

Was afraid of that anyway I'm going to recharge battery and borrow a different compression tester and try again to make sure. I am a bit miffed about timing it was a new timing set with less then 20k on it I hope my tester is just bad but I don't think that is the case.
