sponsors for competition

I was thinking of running the buggy in a few rock crawl comps this spring and summer, and it would be my first time in competition. Also it would be the first full buggy built by the shop to be in competition. I was lookin into getting sponsors. Have any of you guys (an girls) used sponsors for events, and when and how do you work it out? Any advice would be apreciated.

for a racecar i was building, ive been friends with the manager at the local autopart international for a few years... i asked him how much for a clutch for it, and he said free if i put "autopart international" on the car. if you know anyone in a business, just drop a hint... usually they would love to help out. sometimes money, sometimes parts.
