spark plug wires to distributer

I dont know When I look at the schematic the computer provides ground for the relay so the yellow wire is hot from battery the or/ltblugoes to your pumps red is power from eec relay and tan/ltgrn is th ground from the computer to the solenoid> There is a low pressure fuel pump in the tank and I am not sure where the high pressurre pump just trace the fuel line unplug all and test for shorts the inertia switch could be wet or a wire worn thru my book dont say anything about it that i could find if it is not shorted dont worry the pump in the tank has 4 wires 2 for the guage and two for the pump but looks like they use the same ground. I suppose you could check the relay pull it and see if the coil is still good check for resistance between the big connectors should be closed circiuit close to 0 ohms also there is a fusible link between the battery and relay on the yellow wire so if your getting power there it is not shorted. pull the relay and turn the ignition on there should be power to the red wire. You will probably have to disconnect the computer to check for shorts as the or/ltblu wire goes to both the computer and theinertia switch then to the pumps I was reading a post that said the high pressure pump is under the driver on the frame not sure tho. I added u to buddie list and spend alot of time on computer being underemployed really sucks lots of time no money to do what I want.

Yup there is one fuel pump in the tank, and one more on the driver's side frame rail. In my experience, the truck will usually run for a little while with a bad tank pump and a good high pressure pump but not the other way around. The high pressure pump has enough power to pull fuel all the way from the tank but it will eventually overheat and stop working.

so your saying my truck will run as long as the driver pump works? but the truck fired with a new relay.but it blew agai

could one of pumps be shorting out the relay? or would it be more like a bad ground or bare wires touching?

That's what he is saying, but its only partially true. It will run, if the lift pump fails with the engine already running. It won't run well or long like that. The HP pump will go fast (the aforementioned over heat) and then you get to replace both instead of just one.

I am thinking there is a short down stream from the relay both pumps have a separate ground and run on one hot through the inertia switch do you have a ohm meter or light you can test the relays there should be a closed circuit between the two small connectors on the relay and the relay burns up before the fusible link on the yellow wire. He was saying you can run on the high pressure pump but it will burn out from pulling fuel out of the tank. did you take the cover off the relay and see where it is burnt

i didnt see where it burnt but my dads going to check to see what wires are bad with one of his tools..could the pumps be frying the relay? wheres the second relay? i only changed the front passenger relay

Thats my guess I dont know if there is a connector from the harness to the fuel tank or is the harness plugged in to tank but unplug the fuel pumps and check for shorts up to the relay you did not say wether the connector at the relay was clean and all the prongs pushed all the way in just in case because you cant see anything burnt in the relay

Haha. It depends on the situation. I had a bad in-tank pump in my '86. I could literally drive across town and it would die at the last stoplight. Wait a while and it would fire right up, drive some more, until the high pressure pump heated up again. So yes, it COULD run with just the high pressure pump. Mine ran 100% great until that last 10 seconds where the impeller in the pump stopped turning and lost fuel pressure.

It depends on your truck if it would actually work out this way or not. I am just telling you what my real world experiences are rather than how something is SUPPOSED to work.

alright easier way of putting it..would it be easier and maybe cheaper to take it to a shop? just tell him theres a short by the way every prong looked burnt

sorry wish I was there I`m sure I could figure it out for ya what did you guys do last nite

nothing..girlfrieds in labor and my friends dont kno electric..i did go home and put a new relay in

Cheaper, no probably not. Easier, yes. Might be the best option since they will know exactly what they're looking for.

You never did say you messed with the connector at the relay you can normally see a burnt or blown out component on the circuit board or fried contactors hate to see you spend $100 plus for a loose wire and a 5 dollar part. when you take the cover off the relay does it smell burnt.

no not really..but the connecter that i plug the relay in dont look so good..its just old..might just take it to a shop..wish i could do the work but my skills are limited
