spare tire idea

has anyone ever seen a guy just use the old spare tire holder from under the truck flip the one bar on it and make some backets and put in the back of the bed instead of starting from just tubes ?? just an idea what you guys think

I have been planning on doing that after I get my roll bar put in. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Why not just leave it under the bed where it belongs?

My exhaust goes thru that area so I can't put a tire in there anyway, I think it would look kind of neat, besides then I wouldn't have to wrestle the tire from under the truck in the mud/snow.

Im sure it would work but if your gonna go that cheap why not put 3 heavy duty bolts through the lug holes and teh truck?( j hooks mebe?)

I am kind of going for the look of the super expensive tire holders that hold the tire in the bed at an angle, with the u part flipped around the stock hanger should do just about the same thing in theory. I am going to put it up against the front of the bed as much as possible underneath/inside of my rollbar. Specific engineering hasn't been done yet but I would like to make it removable so in the odd chance I would need the bedspace and I can just wedge the spare somewhere amongst the cargo like I do now.

I am going to hit this project after I get the rollbar painted and installed, so I haven't put much R&D into it yet. I might extend the u part to give it more of an angle, depends on how it looks when I put it together.

If cheap is what you are after, they make a plate that bolts against the side of the bed that connects the top of the bedside to the bed floor and the tire bolts to that, they are like $15. My dad has them in a couple trucks and they work pretty good but would interfere with my rollbar and bedliner, but they do a good job of keeping the tire stashed without effecting the cargo space.

yea i wasnt sure if i should put it more to the back like a prerunner thats kinda what i tho but i might look at it to the front with my roll bar too idk

I do haul stuff in in the back of my bed (like gas cans, lawn mowers, tillers, assorted heavy stuff...) which is why I would want it towards the front and more out of the way.

a Few notes on mounting a tire in the bed.

1) It is best to mount the tire vertically, this takes up less bed space.

2) If you mount it the way the factory dual tank trucks mounter their tire
Vertically against the drivers side of the bed forward of the wheel hump
it is INVISIBLE to the driver of the truck while driving.

If you mount it vertically towards the REAR of the bed it is more accessable
when you either have a full load of crap OR you have a topper on the truck

ANYWHERE you mount it in the bed it is more accessable and thus easier to maintain
(I.E. make sure there is AIR in it) when it's "up top"

Exterior "swing away" exterior mount tire carriers look nice
UNTIL you try to look through them (they very efficiently
block your view to the rear.)

Make sure your mount is very solid and the mounts are sufficiently reinforced
because in the event of a collision IF it breaks loose that 60lb tire and wheel combination is a potentially lethal projectile.

Personally I'm using the three lug bracket off of an '88-up Bronco2
and I'm mounting it to two vertically mounted pieces of 3/16" wall 1.5" square tubing.

these pieces of tubing will be mounted (by bolt and weld) to
a 10" piece of 4" wide 1/4" thick
flat bar at the bottom (bolted through the inner bed side
to an identical piece of steel with countersunk flat-head bolts.)

At the bed rail they will be welded and bolted to a piece of 1"x2" angle stock
and bolted throught the lip on the bed skirt to a piece of 3/8" thick flat bar.

Mind you the top rail of my bed is already reinforced by a diamond plate bed
rail cap bolted through to a piece of 1" x1/8" flat bar that runs the length of
the bed and is tied into the steel I used in reinforcing my head gate
(there is a piece of 1/8" wall 3/4x1-1/2" tubing running across the front of the bed bulkhead (headgate) and reinforced on the inside of the bed by a piece of 1-1/2" x1/8" flat bar inside the bed.

I hate the thought of a loose engine battering it's way into the cab in the
event of a collision... But then again that would involve earing out the 4"x3/8" flatbar that runs across under the bed deck that I used as a backup for the cargo tie downs I added.

BTW, I changed my mind when it actually came time to bolt it all into the truck.

I found that I didn't like the results with the three bolt Bronco2 tire carrier bracket.

It stuck out into the bed too much with the rire off of it.

I wound up mounting the tire in the same (behind the axle) location with a modified factory dual tank ranger spare tire mount.

i welded a strap of steel between two bed floor ribs and modified a wing nut j bolt to hold down my tire like in the trunk of some cars.the nice thing about it is you can take it out easy for plywood,etc and it doesn't stick up where it can snag and ruin stuff

Hey 85, since you have a rollbar, you could do what I did when I had mine

I used the the part of the stock spare carrier that goes through the hub hole in the wheel and welded that to a piece of 1x2 (IIRC) steel between the tubes of the rollbar.
