Some odd electrical problems

You did do good figuring that one out!

Congratulations.

Congratulations sir. That is top level wire diagnosing and chasing.

Thanks guys. Took a bit of luck and a multi-meter, but it’s done now.

I’ve been surprised on the things ford changed between the 91 and 92 years

Glad to hear you found it. Thank you for posting the fix.

You said one key thing that makes me believe dash ground. When you mess with the heater controls and the dash lights turn on.

They are coming ON with the heater controls because some power source is looking for ground and it finds it through the dash lights.

This is also one of the reasons that people doing their own repairs should spend a few dollars and buy the factory EVTM for their vehicle. It would let you see every ground point... what all is tied in with it and where on the vehicle it is located.

What's a good source for them?

+1 for eBay. If you're patient and look often you can find EVTMs, and other factory manuals, very reasonably. My honest opinion, getting factory manuals for your truck(s) is the best investment you'll make.

I used to have one for my Aerostar, but I've had Rangers off and on for several decades so I'm not in a big hurry for something for them. Especially with the internet / You Tube, I can get most specs I need that way.

My only current dilemma is a lighting wiring diagram for the '03 Ranger. Want to do some wiring for tow flat tail lights. I think the rear tail light wiring comes up through that huge plug under the drivers seat. If it does, I'd like to put the isolation diodes there inside the cab instead of in the back. No sense in going all the way to the back if I don't need to as well.

The EVTM is wiring diagrams. It’s everything you need to know about the wiring and vacuum systems for that vehicle. It shows where connectors and components are. It shows pin outs of connectors. And so much more.
