Snow wheeling 12/28/08

I am from Walla Walla Wa. and the big thing around here is snow wheeling and tires are a big thing. As with a lot of things bigger is better, but the tire of choice is actually Gumbo monster mudders. They are a soft compound fairly open face tire that does extremely well in the snow and that is about it. They are not great for much else. The most common truck in this valley is the toyota. When Apr 1st rolls around and the mountain is opened for 4x4's, it sounds like a swarm of pissed off bumblebees around here. There are more toyotas with 38's around here than you can shake a stick at. Another thing about wheeling in the snow is tire pressure. Depending on the weight of vehicle and tire size determines how low you can go. I had 38 TSL's on steel wheels on my ranger and would run them at 3 psi and they would do okay. I now have a set of 39.5's on beadlocks and I run them at .5 psi. The difference is like putting it in four wheel drive again. The more flexible the side wall the better.
