i got a ranger with a 4cyl (2.3) in it, right now it is on 33's with no lockers and 4.10 gears. my awesome girlfriend is going to have my truck put in the shop with mods including sas, locker in the rear end, 6in of lift with 38's. if i were to do this i know that i would need lower gears. would my ranger turn the tires okay because i use my truck for transportation as well.

Not sure the 2.3 will handle those larger tires. I would probably stick with the 33s. And that's a hell of a girl friend ya got!

not even if i went with the lower gears? yea i know.....im going to keep her around for awhile lol

Even with lower gears, highway speeds are going to produce a large load on your engine due to the increased drag and wind resistance. With a six inch lift, you're better off going with 35" tires. Even then, you might find yourself having to trim the fenders a little. Honestly, if I were you, I'd save my pennies and keep the TTB front axle-if its a Dana 35. I can't imagine what the bill is to have a shop set your truck up with a solid front axle. And you probably have the 7.5" rear axle. I'd opt for an 8.8" axle for any tire 35" and up. This also allows more aftermarket as far as lockers and gears go.

Later down the road, I would swap in a turbo 2.3L and THATS when I would be looking into a stronger front axle.

how about swapping in a V8 instead? would probably be cheaper and still leave you (her) money for the rear locker. then that would give you time to think about how much and what kind of lift you want as you'll have the motor to handle it.

hahaha no she doesn't sorry lol....i have heard that if you go with a v8 you would have to replace something like the "running gears" as well, is that true and if it is where do they go in the truck? transmission? her aunt and uncle own the shop and they are going to mod the front axle for leaf springs which her dad took of his jeep, instead of coil and shock i know that you can arch the leafs for more lift.

Yeah you would need a different trany/transfer case. An 8.8 would hold up with a good small block like a 4.6 or 302. I wouldn't put anything bigger the 34 11.5's on your rig with a 4 banger as your daily driver. Even then it'll still struggle up hills. If it was just a trail rig it would be a little different, but that's a lot of rubber.

There are a lot of Toyota guys out there running large tires with 4 cylinder motors that do OK...just get the deepest gears you can get.

Not sure why you would mod your daily driver like that though, it's a lot easier to find parts on a Sunday night for a bone stock daily driver than it would be for something that's got pieces of multiple vehicles put together.

I had a friend in HS with a 4cyl toyota 5spd manual turning 35's......... I'm not going to say it was happy, but he never got ran over by any semi's on the highway.

heck yea you would be fine with that tire size and a 4cyl if a carbed 22r can turn them tires a fuel injected 4cyl can turn them get 5.29s and you will be just fine. the motor can handle it and there is no need for a big gas hog v8 or larger v6 unless you do rock crawling and could use some extra torque. most yota guys will do a sas and 35s or 38s and see if they need a bigger motor for what they need

Go 5.13's, they're the lowest common ratio you can get for a D44/60 (unless you want 6.14/17's) and grab an 8.8 which you should be swapping in with 38's. If you want it to be as sporty (38's take a lot to get rolling) you want to look into some form of forced induction later on.

ok thanks so much guys.....ill see if i can get an 8.8 from a junk yard what is forced induction though?

Forced induction is a turbo or supercharger.
