Is there anything that can wear out on the steering shaft of a 96 4x2 with power steering? a buddy said there is a rag joint but im not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I can rock the shaft pretty well before the tie rods start moving. :icon_bounceblue:

I highly doubt the clock spring is the problem. If your horn works and the airbag light isn't on, your clockspring is fine.

my 95 4x4 ranger has the same problem if i figure it out ill post you my problem

yes there is a flexible joint that can wear out. the steering box itself can wear out inside. and the inner and out tie-rods can wear out.

i don't know if a 96 has a rack and pinion or a wormdrive steering gear.. if its a wormdrive then some slop is normal

I just changed the clock spring on my 95 jeep pull the steering wheel but be real careful of the airbag disconnect the battery first it can hurt you and your pocket book. On mine there was a race for the horn ground and the spring was separate and would not allow power to the cruise control. All I needed was a socket and a wheel puller just make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead then lock the steering wheel. On mine there is a bolt you turn all the way out to disable the airbag and expose the bolts that hold it in. Get a manual if you are not sure how to disable it.
