slipping chain

im on my second transfer case and third chain between two cases. the first was the stock 1354 and the second is a rebuild from a 2004 fx4. my truck is a 2001 4x4 ranger electric shift its my daily driver and im not wheeling it hard or anything. i change the fluid in the case every 5 thousand with my oil changes. im tired of streching the chain does anyone know of anywhere to either get a stronger chain or something to fix this once and for all im getting sick of it its getting expensive quick and i need my four wheel drive to work every time without worry

This may be a stupid question but are you coming to a complete stop before switching in and out of 4wd?

That is very strange. I would almost think there's a problem with your driveline somewhere that's putting excessive strain on the case.

My case is almost 20 years old, has been wheeled hard, and is good as new.

The chain in there should be plenty strong, so nobody offers upgrades to my knowledge.

For whatever reason, I only seem to see stretched chains like this on the '98up cases. I would try swapping in a '90-'97 case and see if that holds up better. You'll need to swap your front driveshaft too though.

I have had hell with the chains too. The 1354s are worthless. When did Borgwarner switch from 4 planetaries to 6?

The planetaries have nothing to do with the chain though.

well i checked out the transfer case today. to answer one question i stop before shifting in and out . i went to drain it to check things out and got half a gallon of water out of my case. just a long shot but i think that might be the problem......shit. im thinking a few weeks ago when we had alot of rain i must have driven through some water deeper than i realized we had a street flood and i had to rescue a ladys van. ive never had the same problem with the 96 but its lifted 6 inches on 35s so its higher. do i just need to replace the chain and it should be fine or what? i have to do this cheap this time

Couldn't tell you.

You'll need to check for any wear on the sprockets and bearings. If you find any, probably easiest to just get another case at a junkyard.

Yanno, if you were closer, I have a T-case out of a 93 Explorer... 1354 manual with all the shifter stuff (minus the knob). That would sure solve your problems.

so junkie what rbvs can i get a case out of? i have the 5R55E automatic transmission. what will i need to get from the donor truck and will my 4x4 module shift an older case? mine is electric but if i find a manual shift ill grab it

A '95-'97 case should have the same shift motor on it as yours, a '90-'94 you will need to reuse your existing motor.

Get the donor's front driveshaft too. I THINK it should bolt to your axle OK, but I have not verified this.

seeing how my problem is water entering through the vent tube any suggjestions on where to route an extended tube?
