They probably use the F-150 8.8” bearings and seals.It has the larger tubes but kept the 28 spline axles. They just used bigger bearings to make up the difference. And it has disc brakes with wheel speed sensors at each wheel to meet the stability control and traction control requirements that the previous axles didn't have.
I'm not sure if the rear discs are unique or not since I don't know what the Explorer uses. I know the Explorer Sport doesn't have vented discs, but it is also smaller that the regular Explorer.
Explorer axles have the bigger tubes but also have 31 spline axles with larger axle shafts.
Some Rangers got 31 splined axles but had drum brakes, just some FX4 models and not even all of them got it.
So, yes, it is an 8.8 but there are things that are unique to it that other 8.8 axles do not have on other Rangers and Explorers.
You did the rear brakes on my Explorer 8.8 in the green Ranger, lol. They are solid with small pads.
Yeah, the Rangers were somewhat consistent until the FX4 came out and it got to later production like 08+ and everything got complicated.
