In the instructions it says to mount it centered at either the leading edge or trailing edge of the cab in a pickup.

How picky are they at being mounted on a flat hunk of steel? Is it a big deal like a CB or are they just capitalizing on the most common place on a pickup with an unobstructed view?

Rather than having a cable poking out the door and running halfway across the cab I would prefer to have it going out thru the old shifter hole and zip tied on my rollbar. Nobody would ever know it was there and it would actually be higher than the cab.

I only have 5 days to play with it before I decide it is worth the $$, so while I want a good signal I don't really want to put a bunch of money in it or make it very permanant.

You have the magnet antenna? I have mine stuck right above the driver door, with the cable run down inside the weather stripping and into my dash. It's right at the front corner of the cab, I can touch it from the drivers seat. It works just fine.

Yeah it is the magnetic mount.

I went ahead and tried it on the rollbar, works great in the driveway.

I'm using a non-magnet antenna, actually a factory ford part.

I lucked into a Ford Escape in the junkyard with the factory Sirius Radio and they use a through-the-roof mount.

If nothing else it keeps the antenna coax inside the cab

But their suggested placement of the antenna is about unobsructed view (by the antenna) of the sky
AND as a secondary concern the amount of exposed cable stretched above the roof.

My antenna is mounted not to 4" back from the leading edge of the roof as on the Escape
but halfway between the dome light and the trailing edge of the roof (supercab)

My is right above the 3rd brake light, with the wire coming out from the 3rd brake light. No leaks, works well, inside the cab the wire is easy to hide.
