A buddy of mine has a 98 Explorer 4dr with a 4.0. The transmission is shot. he wants $200 for it. It already has a 3 inch shackle lift in the rear and cranked t-bars upfront. Any input from anyone is appreciated. I fell in love with wheeling about a month ago in my Ranger, but I can't afford to mess up my DD. I sank it 2 inches above the rockers and pretty sure I have silt still in my starter. Should I get this as a woods beater? What kind of options do I have for a trans swap?

m50dr1....is what u want, its the 5spd that would come in the rangers/esploders. for 200 u cant beat it, ud atleast sell the engine for 300 to someone if u end up parting it out lol, esp since u can hear it run before its pulled

the motor runs strong. its got plenty of dings and dents as this was my buddys off roader for quite some time. its the trans i have to figure out. does the m50dr1 bolt right up to the 4.0?

yup, is 98 the ohv or ohc? im honestly not sure myself, but there is a m50dr1 that bolts into that truck yes.
