Your in a similar position as I am... You like what you have for the most part, but it needs some work. Buying the 92 with worse mileage isn't gonna help you at all. Have you looked at buying a replacement ZF?

You are in the same boat I was with my Ranger a few years back. I like the truck. I LOVE the truck. But the engine was wearing out, the trans bearings were shot, it wasn't pretty.

Got my hands on a cheap beater... then I saved up, trolled CL, found what I needed. In the last 5 years my truck has gotten a new trans, engine, driveshaft, and wiring.

i would totally swap out the zf for a newer one, or one in better condition... simply put, 22mph>12mph!

Simply put replacement parts for the diesel are stupid expensive and as adsm stated doing to work pretty well sucks. A reman zf is about $600 out the door. There isn't enough money to budget towards an engine overhaul/replacement and a tranny replacement. If there were i would just swap in a 4wd zf and start collecting parts for a sas.

it's only leaking oil though, from whast you said, it doesn't sound like it needs an overhaul...

well as luck would have it the transmissions are different enough to make a case swap impossible. still though, i'm thinking that if i buy the truck for its axles, some sheet metal, and some other bits and pieces, sell the motor and trans, scrap the rest, i could still come out ahead-ish.
