one way you can tell if its functioning with the light being burnt out or somethin, listen to it, you can always leave the truck turned off, and still put it in 4wd with the key turned to the on position. You should (running or just with the key on) throw the truck into neutral, then hold the brake, put it in 4 high, then once its in 4 high, hit the 4 low button, if the truck is not running with the key just in the on position, you can hear the electric motor working. Also, if you think you've got it in 4 low, put it in gear and you will notice a siginificant difference in how fast the truck will move.
