im looking for a cheep slave cyl for my 88 ranger 2.3 mazda 5 speed. im looking on ebay and want to know...wuts the diffrence from 88 to 00s? thay look the same i know that 88 and older are diffrent. cold i use one thats for a 4.0?

the only difference i found when i swapped my m50d trannys from a 2.3 set up to a 4.0 set up is the clutch lines from a 2.3 an a 4.0 are totally different.. the fittings are different as well.. other than that i THINK they are the same.

crap so i i would have to get the 4.0 hydro line to go with it

correct.. when i put the 4.0 in my splash that came with a 2.3 i ended up using the 2.3 master cylinder an i changed the line to a 4 liter line an 4 liter slave it all came from my parts truck so it worked out.

I dont know differences....but I know I've had the best luck using a Raybestos brand slave.

I'm pretty sure it's a year difference, not an engine difference... The 2.3 trannys I've done (91 and older) had the same line as the 4.0/2.9...

HansB2 is right it's a tear thing, not an engine thing.

there are three styles of slave cylinder used on Ranger Based vehicles:
1)The '85-87 "top port" slave cylinder that connects with a hairpin clip
and an O-ring.
2)The '88-92 Aluminum side connect with a black or Red Dry break coupler
3)the '93-current "plastic" slave cylinder with the "gold" connector

You can use either the second or third type IF you are willing to swap
the plastic line that matches it as the Black (or Red) connectors are
NOT interchangable with the "gold" connector.

There is however another issue.

the master cylinders used in the '83-92 Rangers are all the same
but the master cylinder used from '93-on has a smaller bore.
so while the early master will drive the '93-up slave, but with
high pedal effort and a RAPID motion... if you try it the other way
around you'll be unhappy... because the late master simply won't
play nice with the earlier slaves.
