Shifter Return Springs shot

Hey folks,

Got my bushings in the mail today and installed them tonight. Had a bit of a surprise though - the kit didn't come with the "flat" and "wavy" washers everyone talks about (and that were installed before I replaced them). Instead, it came with just 2 flat washers that were a bit thicker:

I was puzzled at first, and thought I'd have to wait until I could get new washers from a dealer (the ones I pulled out of the truck are destroyed), but soon discovered that one of the new larger flat washers was a perfect replacement for the one flat/one wavy combination:

So, I put in a new washer, lower bushing, upper bushing, new washer, new cap, and put it all back together. Not the miracle fix I was hoping for, but does feel much smoother now. I also found that it looks like the 1st/2nd return spring is there, it's just shortened/jammed to the point where it doesn't do much good anymore. I monkeyed with it some, but I think it will have to wait until a tranny rebuild is needed.

Anyone else seen this different washer style? This is the kit I got (this is the seller too): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...40298991840&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:MOTORS:1123

well that's frustrating. I bought from the same seller a couple of days before you did but I have not received mine yet. Did they ever send you any sort of shipping confirmation? I've received no communication from them since I paypal'd the money.

I tried to push that return spring in, and having actually touched it with my finger it feels more like a ball shape for some reason. I couldn't see and feel at the same time because my hand was blocking the view.

Anyway, I could push it until it was perfectly flush but no farther. Can't tell if it's limited to that or that's just where my finger wasn't strong enough to overpower the spring anymore.

Well, I tried to buy the kit on ebay but someone did the "buy it now" before I could. Fortunately, I had asked the seller a question through ebay, and he wrote back with his phone number to call and ask my questions. He took my order over the phone the next morning when I called, and shipped it out then. So no, no shipping confirmation since I ordered by phone. He did say he used 5-day UPS though. The ad said it would ship from AZ, but I believe the box I received today actually came from MN, for what it's worth. If it's the same guy, I have his number at work. Let me know if you'd like it and I'll PM it to you tomorrow.

I also noticed that it looks like the inner boot that came with my kit was a reman. Plenty of scratches around the cover, and it looks like the remains of the old gasket is still there. Doesn't make any difference to me - the new gasket looks well constructed. I was just surprised to see that.

I could get my fingers down in and feel the springs too. I agree - they're very rounded on the end - almost ball-like. On mine, the 1st/2nd spring was there, and seemed normal - it even had some spring force. It was just that its home position was recessed almost all the way in, so it would only compress another 1/16th inch or so. I played with it quite a bit, but couldn't get it to pop out any further than that.

thanks, I sent an ebay message to the seller and he responded with his phone number, to call in the morning and he'd give me a tracking #. If it really came from MN then it's probably closer to you than me, it may come in tomorrow afternoon.
