Pull the boot down so that you can see the metal shaft. Take an adjustable wrench and put it to the size of the shaft and put it just beneath the shift knob. Take a hammer and strike upwards on the wrench to pop the shift knob off.
If your pretty jacked, You might be able to pull it off by hand. I know that I cant do it though and I am 180lbs at 5'10".
ALL-riiiighty then... on a VERY HOT day, yesterday, my shift knob DID come off--on a crisp 1st-2nd yank, accelerating down the boulevard... p*ssed me off...
... but I guess HEAT is the answer, and knowing that, I'll now be looking for a way-cool replacement!
If the new knob has a set screw, I hope I have a small enough tap to do the deed... er, wait... probably the set screw just digs into the existing shaft a bit?... off to shop.
