shift rail out of alignment

Hey guys, got the tranny from the yard, it wont shift into any gear, it is a 96 m5od r1 4x4, from reading the posts i gathered my shift rail is out of alignment, any tips on realigning those as i have never done it before

i don't know about a m5od but on my fm145 i have to take off the shift boot, the shifter itself from the tranny and then align it

well first you can take the 3 torx bolts off the top and remove the shift stub (make sure you remember which way it goes) then you can take all 10 bolts out of the top cover and lift the top cover off.once the top cover is off you can set all 3 shift forks to their center position and you can look into the tranny and see its condition and set all of the shift collars (the things the fork sits over) into their center postions then bolt the top cover back on the shift stub back in and hopefully everything will work, if it still doesnt shift then the tranny is done for.

NO, NO, NO. Just pull the three torx bolts, stub. then line up the slots with a pry bar/big screw driver. Drop the stub back in and put everything back together.

mutant pony got it right,I just bought a truck that would'nt go into gear and ended up pulling the tranny out before I figured out what was wrong,could have fixed it in 15 seconds,instead it was a two day job

Since the tranny has not yet been installed, it is a good time to do as TireIron said and pull the top cover to take a peek inside and make sure that your junkyard tranny isnt junk before you put it in.


IF THE TRANNY WERE STILL IN THE VEHICLE, then you would want to do it the way mutant pony suggested.
