on a 97 5 speed, how do you get the shifter knob off? I can"t get it to budge.

Work on the shift boot to work it down over a cast in ring
on the shank below the knob (that ring keep the boot from sagging)

After you have it exposed you can take a thin 17mm open end wrench
(SnapOn?) and you can pry the knob up and off.

the shaft of the lever is splined and the knob is hard plastic and just
shoved down over the splines.

Yep, heat is the best way (blast it with a hair dryer on it's hottest setting for about 5-10 minutes).
I tried the wrench method once and although it did get the knob off, it also wound up gouging the bottom of it.

Seriously? Every single RBV I've owned the shifter knob is falling off!!! It bugs me to know end...

i almost did the very comical "whacking ones-self in the head when the knob unexpectedly comes off while reefing on it" manuever....mine was on TIGHT :D

Well you can also get a wrench in there then instead of prying wack
the wrench from underneath with a big plastic hammer.

This however can launch the knob into the dome lamp:)

I don't really worrry about buggering the knob, because I have spares...
