shift knob in the makeing?

ok, couldnt find an answer so i figure ill ask here
how should i go about mounting an 8 ball on to my 85 ranger
it is manual with the splined(push on) style and glued on knob

the old knob is off
and the ball is waiting for me to drill it

any tricks/ sugestiong, on how i can mount it and make it possible to put the stock one back on?

like what size should i drill it to?

Mr Gasket actually lists an 8 ball shifter. I put one in my 94. I was having some trouble keeping it from rotating on the stick so I put some "right stuff" gasket maker on it and it hasn't moved since.

i would just drill the hole slightly larger than the splined shaft, put some glue or gasket maker like he said in there and slide it on. although, it might be tough to get back off. my stock shifter knob used to pop right off while shifting into 2nd until i put some adhesive in there. hasn't come off since. which makes me wonder if it will, cuz i was thinkin' bout getting a new knob. hmmm...

drill it 5/8" dia, 1-3/4" deep and use some rtv to glue it on. it will yank off if you pull hard enough and the rtv will just peel off after that.

Also you could try wrapping the shaft with the same tape they use to regrip golf clubs. Personally I used JB-Weld.

8 Ball on a splined shaft. Drill the 8-ball 1/16 to 1/10 inch smaller than the outer spline diameter. Use a hammer and a 2x4 (to protect finish) and tap it onto the shift stick. No glue, no mess, stays tight.

I put a 4 ball on my sploder. I tapped my shifter then gave the balls to my dad and he took them to a machine shop and had them drill and tap them on a cnc mill.
