Good day all...

Also going sound like Ranger Rico...I too have this droning, and I haven't thought of the carrier bearing, although the clock on my '97 is at a buck and a half. As I am a contractor and have little time to work on my rides, is this something that is a quick fix, ie...replace, like a u joint, or is this where a driveshaft shop comes in...for the carrier bearing. :icon_confused:

Secondly...rear axle...sorry, cannot identify, as I have only been under the truck for a short time...replacing fuel tank straps...there is no drain, or fill port on the axle...thoughts on checking and topping off...is this a pull the axle situation...or...? :icon_confused:

Thanks I appreciate the help.

Carrier beaing should not take too long, as long as the bolts come undone.
Changing the tank straps should be possible without removing the tank completely. Remember it's heavy if it's full.
The fill/level plug for the axle is on the front left side of the diff housing, has a 3/8 square hole in the plug if I remember correctly.

The carrier bearing isn't too bad to replace, I suppose you could say like a U-joint. The rear should be a 7.5. To drain it, you'll have to pull the cover or use a fluid syphon. IIRC, to fill it, there should be a plug on the front side of the axle, near the pinion, a little bit above. Fill it until it starts to drip out the hole.

Thanks, I already did the tank straps...and yes, the tank was nearly dry at the time. The poly tank is great to work with, as I have replaced pumps in metal tanks...now there's some fun. But I never work with a filled tank. One thing that I did notice was that the bolts were easy to remove...not what I expected with one bad strap, and another that snapped during removal.

I will have to go have another look at the axle, I too thought it would be there, however...I didn't see it, then again, you shouldn't be crawling around in 40 degree weather on cardboard in the driveway...to work on the truck.

Where is "springtime" at?

Man...I need a vacation...cannot even remember the year of the truck...96, not 97. :icon_rofl:
