The spring plate is basically your only option. You can go farther in or your shock will hit the frame. If you go further out your shock will hit the tire.

Unless you have done a rear end swap..

Heres my set up. Please ignore the bed cage and the awesome resi mounts (had to go for a test drive). Its a bolt in unit. It looks goofy without a bed underneath it.

15.5" of wheel travel with little spring separation. I will be build some new shackle hangers and C-notching the frame 2". I am shooting for 17.5" with no spring separation.

Thanks guys. I can't see the pics cause my work blocks photobucket so I'll check them out when I get home.

Last night I did something similar to this. I got some add-a-leafs from a friend of mine for free so I put those in the stock springs and flipped the shackles in the stock location. It rides much smoother now and doesn't feel any stiffer but it sits about an inch higher than before. I think I'm going to cut out the bed and run my 2" lift shackles inverted so the rear drops some and gives me some more movement. I'll probably need to move the hanger back as well eventually.

ok... well im going to trade in an 8.8 with 4.56 from a explorer, but i dont get what you mean it will hit the frame even on the inside? :icon_confused: i wanted to run shocks on the inside of the frame rails so there was nothing in the way.... thus the reason for moving the tank and switching to a bronco tank. im still kinda confused haha

hey does anyone have a idea of what weight springs i should use for my front end on 16in fox coilovers with a 2.9 and 6+ d35 ibeams boxed in non 4x4 how i bought them. i have 14in 345 over 16in 350 now (what was on it when i got them)

I was talking about outside of the frame rails.. I said if you run them further inward of the spring perches you will hit the frame rails.

And I was just looking at my truck and thinking about your setup. At what angle do you plan on mounting your shocks?

about the same as yours but im still confused about why do i mount it on the on the spring plate and not to the axle inside the frame rails????:icon_confused:

If.. You are mounting to the outside of the frame rail.

With a stock width rear end, the only place you can land is on the spring plate.

If.. You are mounting inside the frame rails.

Mount as far outward on the rear end as you can.

I am horrible at explaining things. :D

The shock is more effective mounted closer to the tire..
Believe it or not this is true on a solid axle application..

ok i get it so if i do it on the inside run it as close as possible to the frame for best results and outside if i swap in say a nine inch axle

to get the best performance you want to mount your lower shock mount as close to the inside of you wheel. with your 8.8 or 7.5 axle the best and most common place your lower shock mounts is on top of the spring plate. if you swap to a 9in that is wider then you 8.8/7.5 axle your lower shock mount will be on the axle tube in between you tire and you leaf spring perches.

hope this helped

yea difinitly helped thanks so much guys

again does any one know the weight springs i should use for my coilovers up front in my truck i got 8in over ibeams and 16in coilovers help??

I'm no expert and I'm sure some one with more knowledge will say something....
First you need to know the weight of your truck on each corner. I was able to get a rough estimate of mine by flat-towing it to a local hi-way weigh scale. I then weighed the front axle only, then the whole truck. Drive around and then weigh drivers side only - front AND rear axles. With a little bit a simple math you can then determine the weight on each wheel. For figuring the springs you need it's probably best to phone a manufacturer that you plan on using their springs and ask. That's about the limit of my knowledge. There are people here that can help you too, hopefully they see your post and respond as I'd also like to confirm my thinking on springs and how to pick them. It may be better to start a new post as this is a new topic and some people will skip a thread they have already looked at.
Hope I helped a little,

Richard

thanks always floored ill strat a new one hope no one thinks im a annoying SOB ha ha
