So, the transmission on my '86 Ranger seemed like it was shifting harshly from 1-2 (2WD, Auto Overdrive [A4LD], 2.9, 118K miles). I got a bottle of Seafoam transmission fixer and dumped it in. The fluid looked fine, and the transmission works fine other than that harsh 1-2 shift (no slipping, OD works, etc.).

It seems to be working a lot better now, especially those first couple of shifts when the truck is cold. :icon_thumby:

Do I need to do anything else? Is it OK to leave it in there? A buddy suggested changing the filter, which I will do one day when I have the time/motivation.

The filter is super easy on these.............
when I went to change mine, it didn't save me though, the 88 still had the trans crap out.

It got to where I'd have to hit 4grand and it'd slam into first....... then I lost 3rd, and reverse.......

I drove it for several thousand miles like that, stupid auto's.
hopefully you are luckier than I was.

I wouldn't recommend driving around with seafoam on your tranny its going to dilute your tranny oil.. I didnt leave seafoam in my crankcase for very long.. i could be wrong tho just my 2 cents

I thought it was OK to leave it in. According to the Seafoam website:

Can I run TransTune in my transmission fluid over the long term, instead of just before a transmission fluid change?

Yes, you can safely operate your transmission with TransTune added as directed on the can, and it will continue to help keep transmission components clean. TransTune is composed of 3 different petroleum oils, and 2 of these oils will gradually evaporate and be vented out of the transmission system.

I was just trying to save a buck and not spend $50 for a fluid change right now when the Seafoam was only $10. My shifting continues to improve so I guess it works.
