Screens are out of control

A lot of it is locked out when driving which kinda defeats the purpose meanwhile if I wanna watch youtube I would rather do it in the house on the tv.

^^ this too... any function that requires more interaction than what's allowed by law is locked out while the vehicle is out of park (or moving if in a manual).

I've seen Tesla screens hacked so the driver can enjoy doing speed-runs through the original DOOM or super Mario bros while on autopilot.. but thats just it.. the system has been hacked..

Because infotainment systems are designed and implemented In a fashion our overlords deem safe 🤷‍♀️ and they are... for the overwhelming majority of people. no function can take more than 2 seconds to perform, and require more than a glance... way less than a phone requires for just about anything... simple.

It's funny though.. the older generations wheeze on about how "bah.. I can't figure out how to do anything with this confounded piece of technology!... I swear I'm gonna have an accident just trying to change the radio station!"

Backwards it's just about the same thing..

Put a freshly licensed teen in a vehicle made before the early 90s, send them on their way, and then tell them to find AND make a pre-set for their favorite station on the vehicles analog radio... kids definitely gonna wind up in the ditch 😆
My wifes 18 fusion is ridiculious. I had to pull over to figure out how the hell to turn the defrost off and turn on panel/floor.

My jeep is more button oriented so its not as bad for me.

If a kid cant learn how to operate 2 knobs on a old style analog radio they dont have the IQ to be driving.

I could see how some of the 90's style radios might be confusing....but earlier then that...no.

The climate controls (sliders espicially) require zero thought

When I took my squarebody on its shakedown run once I got it running.. I had to pull over and figure out exactly how to set a GD radio station lol.. and this is the tech I started growing up with. I obviously knew to turn the knob.. duh.. but pulling out the tab and then pressing it back in to make it a preset admittedly took me a minute.

How the multiple screens work in my bronco though... got all that nonsense figured & straightened right out while doing 80 down the turnpike in the rain while one hand was stuffing rodeo burgers in my mouth. Easy peasy.

One hand says this is all a matter of opinion.. but the other hand suggests in an educated manner that if this new way of doing things actually WAS as dangerous and distracting as people make it out to be... big brother would of stepped in and said NO by now... because its level of danger would have been proven statistically.

Not counting the cluster that is what $7700 of obsolete in 5-10 years screens look like...

An extra $2200 of course so your kids can watch movies in the back...

Maybe im boring. Honestly i rarely even change my radio station. If it starts fading i just turn the volume down.

On the sirius in my jeep its usually set to prime country. Sometimes willies roadhouse...and once in a great while 70's on 7. Just becsuse

It really just comes down to what people are used to. Nobody REALLY likes change either.. Happens everywhere.

Me and my (10 year older) brother both used to ride the hell out of BMX bikes.. "in his day" the popular handlebars were 6 piece bars that had 6.5 to 7" of rise.. and by the time I was in my biking prime everyone wanted to ride 2 piece bars that had 10 to 12" of rise.. huge difference.. and smaller 6 piece bars just weren't getting made..

Bugged the shit out of him for quite awhile.. but eventually he gave in after riding my bike around a bit and bought some real bars 😋

Setting a station on the old mechanical pushbutton radios is almost a sensual experience, that digital tech sadly lacks.

It's just like the "ka-chunk" sound when an 8-track changes tracks.

Or the satisfying "click-click" from the old floor-mounted headlight high / low beam switch.

I know nothing about bmx'in lol.

I guess im a strange case...i used to enjoy newer tech and "modern" stuff...up untill about the early 00's then i began hating it. (Some stuff i always hated...EFI for example)

Not sure if it was nostalgia or what.

My newest trucks are 30 years old this year. My oldest truck is 40 years old this year.

They still work just fine, for transportation. And for my personal satisfaction in their use and maintenance.

I just don't see these new vehicles, loaded with digital tech, making it past 10 years before they break badly and are not worth fixing.

A lot of the electronics won't be available for repair parts, and I don't see the car makers supporting them past the "best by" date.

And yes, the Olympic sized screen in the new Expedition is uglier than a hat full of assholes.

40 bux. and there are versions at the parts store for 20 sometimes.

reliable? who knows.

all of these newer systems run on can bus.

upgrading the windshield to put all of the data on the window so you dont have to take your eyes off the road will be a thing a diy guy can do sooner then later....

speak to command is easy to do as well with current controllers.

lots of controllers available to do cool shit.

so if the damn thing breaks...you just upgrade it to something cooler for 300 bux....

look at modern tvs..

the abs and airbag stuff is going to be a bigger problem.

Bronco is fairly analog, the screens are still rather small which doesn't really matter as it has actual knobs and switches for most of the controls that one would reach for while driving.

HOWEVER, right after we got ours we were driving somewhere in the rain with the wipers on. They were speeding up and slowing down and it was bothering me. Since she was driving I was going to figure out how to turn off the rain sensing wipers I didn't think our car even came with. Yeah, we have evolved beyond paper owners manuals so you have to look in the radio. But wait... you can't do that while the car is moving.

Turns out it was an actual software glitch and they just recently released a recall on it...

I like the grand wagoneers/wagoneers.

I would love a waggy...

I was bummed with the presets on my retrosound radio are set like a normal modern radio where you hold the buttons down. I took me months to figure out how to set the presets on the original radio 24 years ago and I was hoping the new radio would be the same way for old time's sake. No dice.
