satin or "matte" black has a very slight sheen to it. its true black.

PROS-this is what most "hot rod black" paints come in. super easy to maintain. killer look.

CONS- have to be careful when spraying. too much paint sprayed and itll shine up on ya. cant wetsand and polish it.

flat black is just that- FLAT. it has a slight gray color to it. its not quite as smooth as the matte.

PROS- cost for this type of paint is cheaper cause its usually a single stage paint. hides a lot of body imperfections. looks good on older cars and trucks.

CONS- not as tough as the matte. has a grayer tint than the matte. and tends to be slightly rough. not quite as smooth.

the reason a matte finish comes out smoother than a flat is a matte is a 2 stage paint. a base and a flat clear. and this gives you that smooth matte finish.

a true flat paint job is usually single stage which means the paint and the clear are mixed together. this type of paint doesnt last as long as the base clear. and its not as tough.

for some pics of the matte on my truck, click my build thread below
