Safety Recalls

I'd be curious to know if Ford ever had any recalls or TSBs regarding leaves that get inside and collect up against the blower motor resistor inside of the evaporator box (blower housing) starting fires. :icon_confused:

Twice now I've had a strong smoke smell come from my vents while running the fan on it's 1st (lowest) setting. Both times it was leaves in there (the leaves had coil-shaped scorch marks on them from the wire resistor).
When I got my BII in '04, this was one of the first things I checked on it too. Same thing, plenty of leaves piled up in there, though they hadn't quite made it up to the resistor yet.

I'm the original owner of my '94 Ranger, never once seen any notices about this.

Something you guys with '89-'94s might want to check occasionally if you ever park where leaves might fall (or be blown) onto your truck. (not sure if this affects earlier or later years)

So after looking on google today and then looking at it again when i got to the dealership, my truck already had the recall performed (updated part installed). I just needed the replacement part to fix the leak. $24 and will swap it out shortly. Prob can find it a little cheaper online but I just wanted to get it done and the dealership had 3 of them

Part number 1L1Z-9F924-AA

83-88 have huge slats that let all the sticks and leaves come in that want to. I know some have swapped in the Explorer style cowl with holes but it is a pretty involved process.

I have never had the fire smell but I have had to pull the blower motor because of stems buzzing on the fan.

My switch is leaking and my mechanic said there was a possible recall on this. Called 2 dealerships and they said no open recalls on my VIN but my truck may be too old anyway? It is a 99. Also, does anyone have the part number for this part? Was told it was a Ford only part and the only part number I could find was 9f924 (which I think is just a partial part number). Is this a plug and play repair or is there wire splicing or brake bleeding involved?

There should be at least one open recall. Get me the VIN and I will check it. 9F924 is what we call a "base number" It does not change through vehicle lines or slight changes to the part. The whole part number has a 4 digit prefix to designate the vehicle line, and a suffix that denotes a revision.

There is no splicing or bleeding required. The new style switch screws right in, fluid will run out the hole keeping air out. It plugs in with an adapter harness that should come in the kit.

I need to get the fuel tank straps checked out on my '150... I want to get it regeared first so I can have the speedo reset while it is there though. They look ok to me but it would be nice to quit getting letters from Ford. Hoping to get the rear done this weekend. So maybe next week. :icon_thumby:

If you have a skid plate on your tank (or even if you don't) take one of them off before going in. The reinforcement strap install is one of the biggest jokes I have ever seen. I don't use them at all because wording of the recall instructions basically says "If the straps aren't rusted off fix it which ever way you want". The replacement straps are much better. A missing strap will ensure the replacement straps go on.

I hear Ford is starting to get stingy about fixing the older stuff. If your switch melts and burns the paint off your hood they don't care about the hood anymore. People have a hard time running it through insurance because it has been in the media for what 7 years now? For some reason they think that is long enough to get something done...

Yeah, funny how a letter every month for 7 years about this issue that could set the car on fire is considered enough notice that if you didn't do something about it any consequential damage is on you.

Never had this issue, and I used to park under trees all the time.

Then again, I never use low speeds. If high is too fast then I usually just shut it off and let the air blow through the vents from me moving down the road.

Yup, I've personally had that problem. I was on the high way and smoke started blowing out of my vents. So much smoke you'd think Cheech and Chong were ridding with me. Filled the cab up. Smelled just like burning leaves.

Pretty sure I am getting the new straps anyway. :icon_thumby:

Go figure, I have the 2009 letter from Ford about the speed control switch on the master cylinder.

Here's some of what is says:

Issue: Ford cannot be confident that over many years in service, a speed control deactivation switch installed on your vehicle will not leak brake fluid, posing a risk of fire. This condition may occur either when the vehicle is parked or when it is being operated. This risk exists on vehicles equipped with or without speed control.

Fix: Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to perform repairs under this program on your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor).

I guess I should finally call and get this fixed, and stop being one of the 60% who hasn't responded to the safety recall, lol.

wow maybe i should do this also
