Rusty Bolts?

I am pulling the transmission on my ranger and i have everything out t case and transmission but i need like 2" from the fire wall and then i reliezed that i need to remove the y pipe from the exhaust manifolds.

i got the driver side bolts out but the passanger side still has both of them rusted on. We have tried just about everything possible ( 1/2" breaker bar, wd-40, diesel fuel/oil mixture, rust penitrator, heating then cooling the bolts, impact driver) but nothing has worked. any suggestions?

try heating the bolts cherry red, then putting some wax on it, it should go down into the threads

why are u taking off ur exahust just fuckin get upo under there and wiggle this shit out of it thats how i got mine past it

Yeah, I pulled my transmission/t-case with the y-pipe still in there. But it would have been easier without it.

i have a 2.8l for one with the 5 speed manual trans.
and the y pipe is on the sway bar/radius arm brace.
also i have been trying to wiggle it out but the bottom is hitting the y pipe which is hitting the brace and the top is hitring the fire wall.
the bolts are in an odd place so i cant cut them and if i some how do cut them then i am going to have some trouble drilling out the old ones and replacing them.

try pivoting the rear and dropping the rear down it might work easyer

would it be easier to drill out the bolts with the trans removed?? or if you cut them you might be able to hammer them out with a 2 lb ball peen and a nice punch


*edit*whenever i have to do something like that i just torch the bolts and put new ones in there for next time.....i hate exhaust bolts

When I had my 94B4000 we snapped 3 of the 4 bolts. Took a long while with the torch and slowing turning them back and forth like an 8th of a turn at a time to get them out. A LOT of swearing was involved.

If you can't get the bolts out that hold the Y pipe, I would try to unbolt the exhaust manifolds and see if that made enough play to get the transmission out. If you can get the Y pipe bolts out replace them with stainless for next time. A lot less headaches.

we took the tranny out of my buddies 86 2.9 an didnt take the y pipe off... was a pita but it is do able.. on my 4.0 i had to take my y pipe off.. ended up cutting the bolts cuz they were rusted on.. then i had a hell of a time gettin the manifolds off to torch out the rest of the bolt.. after it was all done i just put a bolt through the holes an threw a nut on ... will make life a lot easier if they every have to come off again.. so why not torch em off?

I almost have them loose. i also can't really cut/torch them because there is all my vacuum hoses and wires because of all the 2.8l carb emissions crap(hopefully will be gone pretty soon with TBI Unit). and that was my next thought of just removing the manifold but that turned out to be more of a pain then just wacking away at the original nut because of all the stuff in the way.

YES! I got a new impact socket for the 1/2" drive breaker bar sprayed some PB Blaster and broke them loose. the exhaust was holding the engine up and as soon as the nuts were removed the engine dropped and i slipped the transmission right out and now i need to figure out whats wrong with the trans. But good news i got my KC's finally and got them in. now all i need is a light bar.

I've done several RBV trannys on 2.9s, 2.8 and 4.0, never had to remove the y-pipe...
