Rough running 98 4.0 after tech library intake mod

I did the exact same mod and did the same thing. Instead, I put a K&N cone filter and made a whole lot of differance. Ran a lot better and gain gas milage. Didn't mess up the MAF or anything...

Hey guys sorry been busy with school but I did the intake mod where you modify a shower drain kit to fit onto the end of the MAF and then slap a cone filter on it. I had a thought today while driving home that could there be a possibility that the hole in the shower drain piece doesn't line up exactly with the opening on the MAF causing air turbulence to hit the sensor making it run rough?

The other thing you could do instead of a shower drain, is hit a junkyard for a Ford Contour MAF housing (other models might be similar) since it is round on both ends without the flare for bolting to an airbox, and your MAf sensor will fit in it. The flanges on the side also work for mounting.

Personally, I didn't like how the fan slung water into the filter and caused issues (I didn't have any sort of shield), and I liked using an OEM style filter element, so I just switched back to a normal airbox and enlarged the hole by taking out the air horn behind the headlight. If you want to run an open-element (key word - OPEN) filter, be aware of the shortcomings to the configuration.

*Note - I have a 3.0, so things might not look similar. Only 4.0 I've been around much was a 2000 Explorer, and it had almost identical factory airbox setup.
