I want to replace the blown 4.0L engine in my 2000 Ranger. Want to go old school. What is a bolt in alternative that would be shipped in the crate?

That will drop in, bolt up, and work?

A 4.0.

That was good, no help, but good. I want to put a small block, 289. Anyone have any experience changing out the 4.0L?

well if you want a small black just takea 302 out of a 96-2000 exploder....that will bolt up....

That's racist.

If you want a V-8 go with a 302. The 289 is kinda pointless. 5.0 makes a lot more power, gives you more options, and is more widely available.
